Oakland, CA – Sprinters Hilton Clarke (AUS), Boy van Poppel (NED), Karl Menzies (AUS), and Jake Keough (USA) led the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team to several top 10 finishes across the globe this weekend. On Sunday, July 8, Clarke took third in Southern California at the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix, van Poppel locked down the fifth place spot in Stage 8 of the Tour of Austria, and Keough snatched another top 5, grabbing fifth in Stage 9 of the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China. Menzies also secured another top 10 for the squad at the Tour of Qinghai Lake, with his seventh place finish in Stage 8 on Saturday, July 7.
Hilton Clarke 3rd in Manhattan Beach Grand Prix
On Sunday, July 8, the Australian trio of Rory Sutherland, Jonny Clarke and Hilton Clarke, took on the field at one of the sport’s more famous criteriums, the ever-popular Manhattan Beach Grand Prix. And the experienced teammates, who work so well together, did not disappoint as their strong effort was more than enough to enable Hilton Clarke to lock down the third place spot on the podium.
Following the race, Clarke said, “The Manhattan Beach Grand Prix has always been a tough course for me in previous years, so I’m extremely happy with 3rd place today. Jonny did a great job keeping the race together and Rory did a great lead out for me down the back straight. This was truly a three-man effort and I’m glad I was able to do my part and deliver a result for the team.”
Tour of Austria – Boy van Poppel and Ben Day Grab a Pair of Top Five’s
Combined with Teammate Ben Day’s (AUS) fifth place finish in Stage 5, Boy van Poppel’s strong effort at the end of the final stage of the Tour of Austria on Sunday, July 8, gave Team UnitedHealthcare a pair of fifth place finishes in the eight-day stage race. Team Type 1-Sanofi’s Daniele Colli (ITA) took the Stage 8 victory while Team Katusha’s Alexey Tsatevich (RUS) ended up in second place. Blaz Jarc (SLO) of Team NetApp rounded out the podium in third place.
Team Director, Hendrik Redant, commented on the way the squad raced, saying, “The last day here at the Tour of Austria proved to be another very hot one. The boys had the task of covering any big moves in the beginning of the race and throughout the day. Marc (de Maar) was in the first break for us, and overall, the boys did their job.”
Redant continued, “Our guys worked hard and worked together with some other teams who were also interested in a bunch sprint. Boy (van Poppel) wasn’t feeling 100% and was a bit sick before the start, but he stepped up big for us. Robert (Förster) was going to be our man but at 300m to go, we had it set up for Robert and unfortunately he got blocked in the position fight to the sprint. So Boy was going strong and took us to the line, getting passed by just a few riders at 20m from the line and he finished in fifth place.”
Tour of Qinghai Lake – Menzies and Keough Score Two More Top 10s in Stages 8 and 9
Following Jake Keough’s pair of second place finishes in Stages 2 and Stage 7, strongman Karl Menzies scored a top 10 finish for himself, taking seventh place in Stage 8 on Saturday, July 8. Then, on Sunday, July 8, Keough followed up his pair of deuces earlier in the week with a fifth place finish in Stage 9, giving the Team three top 5 and one top 10 finish thus far in the 13-day stage race.
