Sabugal, Portugal – Kai Reus (NED) of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team emerged victorious in Stage 7 of the 2012 Tour of Portugal, powering his way to victory in the final 2km earlier today in Portugal. Reus’ win is the third podium topping triumph of the 10-stage Tour of Portugal, following Teammates Jay Thomson’s (RSA) Stage 1 win and Jason McCartney’s (USA) Stage 6 win, both emphatic solo efforts from the U.S. based Pro Continental team.
Team UnitedHealthcare has been simply dominant in Portugal and today’s 185.3km trek from Gouveia to Sabugal was no exception.
Team Director, Hendrik Redant, said of Reus’ big win this afternoon, “This was another perfect execution by the guys! Our plan (which we discussed in our pre-race meeting) was to go and look for breaks in the first hour of the race. And once again, our boys did a really good job covering all of the attempts.”
“After one hour of racing, 14 riders got away. In that break we had Davide Frattini (ITA) and Kai. None of the riders in the break created any danger for the yellow jersey, as they were all four minutes or so down in general. The gap grew to about six minutes, as the team in the lead of the race decided to control this break from a distance. Then about 55km from the finish, Kai attacked. Another group of three riders countered close to the finish, gaining 28 seconds on Kai, but thanks to an incredible effort, he got back into the lead with 2km to go, and powered his way to victory!”
“This has been an amazing week for our UnitedHealthcare Team in Portugal! We are very pleased with the effort and the results.” Redant concluded.
