TAVIRA, PORTUGAL – Although their efforts did not yield a podium result in Portugal, the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team closed out the 39th edition of the Volta ao Algarve with a solid overall performance that included two top 10 finishes, one team stage classification win on Stage 2, and several top 20 results, including Philip Deignan’s 14th place finish in the overall general classification.

Italian speedster, Alessandro Bazzana, scored the first two top 10 finishes of the season for Team UnitedHealthcare (9th in Stage 1 and 7th in Stage 2), while teammates Kiel Reijnen (12th in Stage 2), Philip Deignan (17th in Stage 3, 18th in Stage 4 Time Trial, and 14th overall) and Marc de Maar (19th in Stage 3) rounded out another set of multiple top 20 results for the third consecutive race this season.

 

Commenting on the Team’s performance in Portugal, Team Director, Hendrik Redant, said, “We saw a very strong team that raced hard and worked well together in Algarve. Alessandro did a great job in the sprint finishes with two top 10 results, and Kiel, Marc and Phil, all got in the top 20 on a couple of stages. The whole Team was effective. Chris Jones did an excellent job all week getting and staying in the breaks, while Ben Day, Davide Frattini and Adrian Hegyvary also worked hard, protecting our guys to get them in a position where they could finish well. This was a good week for our boys and a sign of good things to come this year.”

Malaysia’s Le Tour de Langkawi (February 21 – March 2) is the next stop on the UnitedHealthcare Blue Train’s 2013 schedule. Expect the level of intensity and focus on teamwork to remain high throughout next week’s world-class 10-day race in Malaysia.
