The Crit Chronicles: Episode 2, Blue Train Back on the Podium at Dana Point
The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team had a busy week of racing, fielding both men’s and women’s squads at the Tour of the Gila while also sending men’s rosters to the Presidential Tour of Turkey and Dana Point Grand Prix on Sunday. The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team criterium contingent comprised of Karl Menzies, Luke Keough, Brad White, and Adrian Hegyvary headed to sunny Southern California to race against a seriously talented field. Criterium team captain Hilton Clarke was unable to race, as he is recovering from a fractured wrist resulting from a crash at the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic. However, in true Blue Train fashion, Hilton made the trip to California to resume his duties as team captain, leading the pre-race strategy meeting and then supporting his teammates from behind the barriers. The race was fast from the start, thanks to the wide and dynamic 6-turn Dana Point course. Breakaway attempts were frequent but unsuccessful for the majority of the race until a 3-rider attack gained a significant advantage in the second half of the race, causing the UnitedHealthcare Blue Train to move to the front, up the pace and regain control of the race. The men launched the Blue Train leadout, propelling Luke Keough to second place at the finish, earning another podium for the team. The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team now focuses on next week’s Amgen Tour of California.
