Crit Chronicles: Episode 7; Team Takes 1st and 2nd at Manhattan Beach
The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team’s criterium squad returned to Southern California this weekend to race the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix. A popular and well-attended race on the national criterium schedule, the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix drew a stacked field of talented criterium racers. A breakaway of two riders carved out an advantage of 30 seconds over the peloton early into the race. With a sprint in mind, the men of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team worked with the other teams to bring back the breakaway, accomplishing the task with 10 laps remaining. With their leadout train well-dialed following recent back-to-back wins at the Tour of America’s Dairyland, the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team was able to position Ken Hanson for the sprint victory, with teammate Luke Keough sprinting to second place on the podium. Ken commented, “I owe the win at Manhattan Beach to the boys for setting up a perfect leadout! The team kept any big breakaways from getting away and with 4 laps to go they hit the front and kept the pace fast and safe for the final lap. This put me into the final corner in 1st position. We had a plan and the guys executed flawlessly!” The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling criterium squad now heads to Canada to participate in British Columbia’s Superweek.
