Hannah Barnes Sprints to Podium on Final Stage, Team Concludes Successful Tour Femenino de San Luis
The women of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team concluded the 6-stage Tour Femenino de San Luis on Friday with a fast, flat, and aggressive 80-kilometer circuit race through San Luis. With the top few general classification positions within a handful of seconds, the final stage was animated by heavily watched and covered attacks, none of which were successful in building an advantage until a lone rider escaped on the final lap. The soloist was successful in creating a gap and took victory on the final stage. In the bunch sprint for the final podium spots, UnitedHealthcare Blue Train sprinter Hannah Barnes secured the final podium position for her team, concluding an outstanding first stage race campaign for the team in 2015.
With this strong showing, the women proved they are in top condition and ready for another incredible season, yielding three stage wins (Hannah Barnes, stages 1 and 2; Katie Hall, stage 5), best U23 rider classification (Hannah Barnes), best climber’s classification (Katie Hall), and 3rd place in the team classification, in addition to victory in the Grand Prix Juana Koslay on the day preceding the opening stage (Hannah Barnes). Sporting Director Rachel Barnes commented, “After such a great week it would have been nice to finish it off with a stage win, but the team still had a very successful race. The women showed excellent form and even better teamwork, both clear signs that a bright season is ahead.” The racing resumes next week when the men of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team line up to begin the men’s Tour de San Luis on January 19th. Returning Blue Train riders Kiel Reijnen, Jonny Clark, Ken Hanson, and Carlos Alzate will unite with new additions Janez Brajkovic and Marco Canola to contest the 7-stage race.
