Katie Hall takes 4th, Barnes keeps white jersey on Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race, Stage 2
The women of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team started the 2nd stage of the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race in possession of the race leader’s yellow jersey, on the shoulders of Katie Hall after her incredible stage 1 victory. The women raced at total of 50 miles, racing two laps around Lake Tahoe, then back up to Heavenly Ski Resort for the finish. After numerous attacks attempted to upset the peloton, the race came back together at the base of the final climb. The last pitch before the finish shattered the field with grades of 20%. Hall impressed fans once again with a 4th place finish, while Hannah Barnes retained the Best Young Rider’s white jersey for the second day in a row. Sporting Director Rachel Heal commented, “I’m really proud of how the team rode today. It was a tough day, and one of the most aggressive races I’ve seen in the US this year. The team worked hard to keep the race together, and although we didn’t keep the yellow jersey, tomorrow is another day and we’re not done fighting in this race yet.”
The final stage of the 3-day race will take place tomorrow on the streets of downtown Sacramento. The sprinter-friendly circuit around the California state capitol will be a huge contrast to the winding mountain roads of South Lake Tahoe. With a strong sprinting contingent on the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team roster, the women will be once again aiming for the podium.
