In the Community: Visit to Southwark School
Teamwork plays a critical role within Momentum Sports Group, and serves as the foundation of our success as a program. It takes each and every one of us to keep this team moving forward, on and off the bike. Originally, the team planned to visit Southwark School in Philadelphia on the Friday before the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic. Cycling stars John Murphy and Hannah Barnes visited the school last year and were very excited for the opportunity to return this year and spend time with hundreds of students, teachers, parents, and community leaders.
Unfortunately, the travel day did not work out as planned. John and Hannah’s flight was delayed, forcing them to miss their connection and ultimately miss the event at Southwark School. As soon as the staff heard about the riders missing the event, they stepped in and seized the opportunity. We would like to recognize Sky Walsh and Jorge Romero for going above and beyond their duties and responsibilities and attending the event in the place of the riders. Jorge and Sky went to the school and spoke to the kids about their experiences and travels with the team around the world. They gave the children a tour of team car that supports the riders in races, and brought a team bike so the kids could see a real pro bike in person!
Typically, staff members do not attend events, as they are quite busy with their pre-race responsibilities behind-the-scenes. That is what is different about our team. Each member of our team has interesting stories, experiences and knowledge, and each member is eager to share them with the communities in which we travel. Riders, staff, men, and women: we are all one team– the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team.
