Luke Keough Laps Field to Take Victory at Rochester Criterium
Luke Keough played his cards right at the USA Professional Road Tour Rochester Criterium on Saturday. Riding fast from the gun, Keough lapped the field, before benefitting from some late race teamwork to seal the victory.
The Rochester Criterium has been on the calendar for many years, providing great excitement for the estimated 15,000 people that lined downtown to watch the action. Starting out under the floodlights, the 90-minute race was contested over a very short four-corner course. With breakaway companion Curtis White, Keough worked hard to gain the lap on the field after just 15 minutes of racing.
Flanked by teammates Ty Magner and Carlos Alzate, Keough was in safe hands coming into the end of the race. Alzate took the role of captaining the Leadout train, and took to the front with one lap to go. Keough, tucked in behind Alzate, was delivered into the final corners in first place.
With just 350m to go, Keough avoided a dangerous inside move to enter the home straight in the lead. From there, it was a true test of horsepower, with Keough triumphing at the line.
Keough was happy to take the win, “It’s a privilege to have teammates like Ty [Magner] working for you, as you know they’re so capable of winning themselves. I’m happy I had the legs to pull off the win. I’m looking forward to the later half of the season now!”
In the women’s event, Dutch rider Iris Slappendel took second place after spending most of the day riding off the front of the pack. As the light faded over the town of Rochester, Slappendel dug deep to keep off a charging peloton. Riding for more than the individual result, the second place added to UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling’s points total for the 2016 Professional Road Tour season. The team currently has a slender lead in the team competition. Slappendel’s teammate Rivera is still leading in the individual competition, with the team focussing on wrapping up both victories with five events left on the calendar.
Coming up next for the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team’s Professional Road Tour calendar is the Chris Thater Memorial Criterium taking place on August 27th in Binghampton, New York.
