Winder takes wins on stage 1 and 2 at Tour de Feminin
The start to the women’s European campaign was a success with Ruth Winder nabbing wins on both the first and second stages of Tour de Feminin. On stage 1 Winder leapt out of the group with 30km to go and soloed away to win the 120km stage with 1:15 lead over second place.
All in all it was a great day. We all were attacking and at the end of the day, my attack is the one that stuck. I went with about 40 kilometers to go and saw that I had a gap pretty immediately, I just put my head down and thought, I’d better keep driving. I was able to hold it to the line for the win.
When asked about the victory Director Rachel Heal said, “This is a fantastic start to our European campaign. We’ve had a great season in the U.S. to date and it’s great to be able to come over to Europe and prove right from the start that we can mix it up over here as well.”
On stage 2 Winder repeated the win, this time sprinting out of the bunch after a hairy final few kilometers. A chaotic run-in to the finish line lead to a crash which took down teammate Lauretta Hanson, who is recovering and still racing. In spite of the messy finish the team led out Winder to deliver her to another safe victory on stage 2.
We showed good teamwork again today. We were present at the front of the group, we tried for another break with Tayler (Wiles) riding really strongly. It in the end came down to a fast and windy sprint finish. The team did a great lead out. Lauretta (Hanson) took me flying into the last 400 meters and set me up well for the finish. I’m happy for another win. I hope all the riders that went down today are okay.
