Mannion second on GC after strong time trial performance at Tour of Utah
SALT LAKE CITY – Gavin Mannion jumped to second place overall in the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah after storming to a top three finish in stage 3’s Big Cottonwood Canyon individual time trial.
The 25-year-old’s effort on the challenging course clocked a time of 18:55 over 9 km to move up four places on the general classification and now lies 26 seconds behind the new race leader, Rally’s Rob Britton, who won the stage. Serghei Tvetcov (Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis) was second on the day.
“Today was a very hard nine kilometre uphill time trial on Big Cottonwood Canyon. It was a difficult one to pace with the altitude and gradient so I tried to do a consistent power which made the time trial progressively harder,” Mannion said. “It wasn’t a pleasant effort, but I’m happy with the ride and look forward to the rest of the week.”
UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling will start tomorrow’s 199km undulating and fast stage with two riders in the top ten, Mannion and Jonny Clarke, who bumped up two places to ninth on GC, a minute down.
