Women come out swinging at Winston-Salem Cycling Classic, Photo Gallery
Both Diana Peñuela and Lauretta Hanson manage top-5 performances at the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic this weekend, with Peñuela 3rd in the road race and Hanson 4th in Saturday’s criterium. The USA Cycling Pro Road Tour and UCI 1.1 event attracted top talent from around the globe, following on the heals of the Tour of California.
The hard day of racing, along with unpredictable weather gave Peñuela the chance she was looking for at the end of race. She and several others slipped away from the peloton in the final kilometers, and Lily Williams (Hagens Berman-Supermint) managed to out sprint Peñuela and Arlenis Sierra at the line.
Winston Salem has always been one of my favorite races. It is a technical course and the rain promised a hard race with many attacks. I am fortunate to race alongside my strong teammates who sacrificed their own opportunities for a result for the whole team.
In the criterium on Saturday the race unfolded as planned, with the women in blue letting little get away but also letting allowing themselves the opportunity to attack. In the final kick, Lauretta Hanson fought her way to 4th place on the day, just off the podium.
