Banks takes second at Tour de Feminin opener
The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling women’s team started the Tour de Feminin with a bang after Lizzie Banks took second place on the first stage of the Czech Republic stage race despite crashing just two kilometers into the race.
Hanson third, Hall in QOM jersey
Lauretta Hanson finished third on the stage, while Katie Hall scooped up enough Queen of the Mountain points to claim the polka dot jersey during the 119 kilometer race.
“It didn’t start very well, I crashed early on into the race,” Banks said. “The bunch was crazy and it only settled down about halfway through. Katie did really well getting the QOM’s and then later in the race we all wanted to be really aggressive.”
And aggressive they were. As the race wore on, the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team put in attack after attack and split the peloton.
With about 30 kilometres to go, Banks put in a big attack and managed to get some time on the peloton. She was joined by eventual winner Floortje Mackij (Sunweb) and, working well together, got a gap of eventually 50 seconds.
“With about three kilometres to go, she stopped working with me, so I drove it to the line and she took the sprint, but it’s okay because we took second and third on the day which gives us a sense of confidence going into tomorrow and Katie got the queen of the mountains jersey so it was a good day out.”
