UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling end season with Tour of Taihu Lake
On October 7, the blue squad will start the Tour of Taihu Lake, marking the final chapter of the season. The Chinese race will play out over eight days, with the prologue starting tomorrow.
Alzate, Tvetcov named team leaders in China
Carlos Alzate and Serghei Tvetcov will be the protected riders, building off of Alzate’s third place overall at this race the year before.
“He did a solid prologue and claimed intermediate and finish time bonuses, so he was able to be on the podium at the end of the race last year,” team director Seba Alexandre said.
Along with Alzate, Serghei Tvetcov, who won the Tour of Korea this year, is also one to watch. The 29-year-old Romanian has shown to be at the top of his game late in the season, finishing second overall in the Colorado Classic in late August.
“Serge showed that his is capable to win any of these races and is in great form, so we will keep him as our wild card,” Alexandre said.
Joining Tvetcov and Alzate in China are Hugo Velazquez, Alex Cataford and Daniel Eaton, who finished just outside the top ten last year. Eric Marcotte will round out the roster of six.
“It looks like most of the stages are, and have been finishing with field sprints,” Marcotte said. “We will have some good options for that. In the overall, if the race splits apart on the climbs one of the harder stages offers, we should have some riders able to feature.”
“I have raced in Taiwan, but it’s my first time in China,” Marcotte went on to say. “It will be interesting be to see the culture and differences in food. I’m hoping the air quality isn’t too bad also.”
